Wetland Restoration and Faunal Diversity: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract

Wetlands are among the most productive and biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth, providing indispensable ecological, economic, and social benefits. They function as natural water filters, flood regulators, carbon sinks, and habitats for a wide range of flora and fauna. Since the mid-twentieth century, however, rapid urbanization, industrialization, agricultural expansion, infrastructure development, and climate change have resulted in extensive wetland degradation and biodiversity loss worldwide. The period from 1947 to 2017 witnessed remarkable progress in wetland science, conservation policies, ecological restoration techniques, and international cooperation aimed at reversing these adverse trends. This review synthesizes seventy years of scientific knowledge on wetland restoration and its influence on faunal diversity. Using a comprehensive review methodology based on peer-reviewed journal articles, books, technical reports, and publications from international organizations, the study examines the historical evolution of wetland restoration, major drivers of wetland degradation, restoration approaches, and ecological responses of faunal communities. Particular emphasis is placed on aquatic and semi-aquatic organisms, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and aquatic invertebrates, whose population dynamics serve as indicators of ecosystem health. The review demonstrates that successful wetland restoration enhances habitat quality, increases species richness, improves ecological connectivity, strengthens trophic interactions, and supports ecosystem resilience. Nevertheless, restoration outcomes vary according to hydrological conditions, landscape characteristics, restoration design, management strategies, and long-term monitoring. The study highlights the importance of integrated watershed management, adaptive restoration planning, community participation, policy support, and biodiversity monitoring in achieving sustainable wetland conservation. The findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between wetland restoration and faunal diversity while identifying future research priorities for ecological restoration and biodiversity conservation in the context of global environmental change.
